A graphic artist by trade, Jill DeGroff's true passion is drawing
people she encounters in the bars and restaurants where her work
often takes her. Departing from tradition, Jill steers clear of
luminaries and has aimed instead to capture the soul of twenty-first
century cafe society; the artists, barkeeps, and musicians as well
as the lone straggler at the end of the bar.
Jill has been practicing the art of caricature for over thirty years,
from the streets of the lower east side to the mountains of eastern
Kentucky, studying faces and accents was always a passion along
with getting to know people who lived an entirely different existence.
Artists who have influenced her work are Diane Arbus, Art Spiegelman,
Al Hirschfeld, and Gvignol Massaguer. Her work appears in bars around
New York City and appears regularly in Slammed Magazine.
